The MENTOR project was created with the aim of raising awareness among the European population, especially young people and first- and second-generation migrants, as well as the general public, about the importance of safeguarding democracy and fundamental rights. Through reflection on the lessons learned from authoritarian and totalitarian regimes of the 20th century, the project seeks to promote a greater understanding of democratic values and their protection against current dangers that threaten the foundations of democratic societies. Concerns about the rise of populist and radical movements and the spread of fake news have prompted the need to act to prevent the decline of democracies towards authoritarian regimes, as happened in the 1920s and 1930s.
The project has been designed by a team of experts who, aware of the current challenges, have identified that young people and migrant communities need educational tools to help them better understand the value of freedom of expression and the importance of humor as a form of resistance. The project activities are aimed at providing this knowledge, offering theoretical and practical training so that participants can actively act to protect fundamental rights in their communities.
The expected results of the MENTOR project are as follows:
- Raise awareness among at least 2,000 people across the EU about the importance of democracy and fundamental rights.
- Engage young people and migrants in debates on freedom of expression and resistance to oppression.
- Provide training to participants on how to identify and respond to threats to democratic values in their societies.
- Create accessible and practical educational materials for young people and trainers on the use of humor as a tool for resistance.
- Develop an online discussion platform to encourage the exchange of ideas on democracy and fundamental rights among young people across Europe.
To achieve these objectives, the following activities will be carried out:
-Establishment of the survey
-Drafting and testing of the survey
-Dissemination of the survey and online event
-Report on results
-Creation of educational materials
-Awareness-raising activities
